Yifei (Jenny) Jin: My interests and activities
My name is Yifei Jin, and I am a 6th-grader from Fuxue Hutong Primary School in Beijing, which was founded in 1368. As one of the oldest schools in China, it provides a high quality education that emphasizes academic achievement along with the development of both creativity and hands-on capability. The school offers a variety of clubs and organizations to enrich students’ extracurricular activities.
I actively participate in various activities both inside and outside of the school, particularly community service and various volunteer activities. Being one of the core members of the school’s Golden Sail Orchestra, the cheerleading squad, and the marching band, I take part in a variety of performances and competitions. Currently, I am also the student president of the school. I am very proud of my school for its history and its diverse programs and activities.
In September 2016, I took part in the performance of “Flagging Dance” broadcast on the CCTV (China Central Television) show “The Most Beautiful You,” which won broad acclaim from a nationwide audience. After that, I also performed the flagging dance in the BTV (Beijing Television) talk show “Big Hands Holding Small Hands.”
As the captain of the cheerleading squad of our school, our team won the first prize in both the 2015 China Open Cheerleading Championship and the 19th Bei-jing Student Arts Festival.
I began to learn to play flute when I was seven years old. I have been practicing it on a daily basis. In December 2015, as the host as well as the first chair of the flute section, I participated in the special performance of the Beijing Student Golden Sail Performing-Art Troupe.
I am also very interested in drama and joined the school’s drama club in 2015. I enjoy the process of doing rehearsals with other members on the stage. In the school’s performance, I played the role of He Xiaoduo in the play of a new version of “Fox Borrows Tiger’s Fierceness.”
It has been my honor to represent all of the pupils of Beijing and the country to welcome presidents or heads of five countries: they are the Presidents of Austria, Turkey, and Poland; the Chairman of Laos; and the Australian foreign minister. I'm very proud of the diplomatic connections I made.
In addition to the above activities which are associated with my school, I also participated in some other activities which are not related to my school.
I began to learn Chinese folk dance when I was four years old. I performed the traditional Mongolian folk dance at the school’s Christmas Party in 2015. I start-ed to learn different styles of Latin dance in first grade. I enjoy wholeheartedly the dynamics, movement, and rhythms of the Latin dances.
Dancing taught me many essential lessons about life: hard work, precision, per-severance, flexibility, discipline, teamwork, and harmony. Dancing exerts a gradual and imperceptible influence on me with its countless benefits. It enhances my aesthetic taste and establishes my self-confidence and self-discipline with its perfect combination of physical activity, social interaction, and mental stimulation. Of course, learning to dance takes concentration and dedication, and it strengthens my ability to face difficulties.
In addition, I also like hosting, public speaking, poetry reciting, and singing. I won the first prize in the 7th Beijing Dongcheng District’s Golden Microphone Host Competi-tion in 2016. I was selected as one of the “10 Best Student Hosts of Beijing” for the last two years. In the 2nd Youth Talent Contest of Beijing in 2015, to challenge myself, I chose to give a public speech titled “Day Breaks” instead of a dance performance.
I found great interest in playing tennis when attending a summer camp at the Fay School in the U.S. this past summer. After I returned to China, I immediately began to take private tennis lessons.
