In chess, the moment a pawn reaches the other side of the board, it promotes — it becomes any piece the player chooses. For centuries, that meant physically swapping it out for a different token. This design solves that problem differently: a pawn that literally transforms itself, expanding from pawn size to queen size and revealing the piece's features — including its flared crown — through an internal mechanism triggered by the board itself. The project was created by Works By Design, inspired by a CGI transforming chess piece originally designed by Polyfjord. What started as a bulky setup with multiple springs and a manually-actuated mechanism was eventually refined down to a single spring, a set of pins, and four magnets embedded inside the 3D printed shell. The result is a pawn that sits completely closed during normal play — and snaps open into a full-sized piece the moment it hits a promotion square on the custom modular board. The full set includes four transforming pawns — Queen-Pawn, Rook-Pawn, Bishop-Pawn, and Knight-Pawn — along with a modular chess board with custom activation tiles that can be rearranged to create different game variations and promotion rules. The Knight version is the most complex of the four — its asymmetric shape required an entirely different internal geometry compared to the rotationally symmetric Queen, Rook, and Bishop. It's one of the clearest demonstrations of what desktop 3D printing makes possible — a mechanical design so intricate it would have required injection moulding and a manufacturing budget a decade ago, now printable at home overnight.
