Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and First Officer Jeff Skiles board US Airways Flight 1549 from LaGuardia Airport to Charlotte Douglas International Airport in the afternoon of January 15, 2009. At about 2,800 feet (850 metres) in the air, three minutes into the flight, the Airbus A320 collides with a flock of birds, disabling both engines. They don't have much time to deliberate, and Sully ditches the plane on the Hudson River after concluding that they won't be able to reach any local airports (Teterboro Airport being the closest). The crew and passengers escape with only minor injuries, with no fatalities. Sully is praised as a hero but still suffers the consequences.
The simulations are replayed with a 35-second break before the plane is diverted after the NTSB acknowledges his criticism. The plane lands short of the runway at LaGuardia, and the plane to Teterboro crashes into structures before the airport. The NTSB reports that the port engine's study, which has since been recovered from the river, supports Sully's claim that the engine had had been significantly damaged by the bird attack and that Sully had responded appropriately during flight 1549. Sully gives the credit for the successful outcome to everyone on board, the air traffic controllers, the ferry employees, and the emergency response teams.
