Legendary & Fabulous! Germany's oldest city, WORMS: kings & emperors, 'Small Jerusalem', M. Luther

Germany's oldest city and one of the most legendary and historic cities north of the Alps. A long history and a bustling lively city today. This is the city where Martin Luther refused to recant his teaching at the Diet of Worms in 1521, it is the old Celtic 'oppidum' Borbetomagus and the capital of the Vangiones in Roman times (1st-5th century). It was a centre of Christianity since at least the 4th century CE, with famous personalities, like St Martin, St Amandus, St Rupert and Burchard as well as popes, like Leo IX. A centre of power in the Frankish Kingdom - Merovingians and Carolingians - and the Holy Roman Empire. It was a centre for Jewish learning and Jewish traditions for almost 1,000 years , with famous talmud commentators like Raschi, the oldest synagogue in Germany, the oldest Jewish cemetery in Europe, and many more.
Lots of architectural master pieces, like the cathedral and other beautiiful Romanesque and Gothic churches, but also the Baroque, Empire and Art Nouveau buildings. The city's history goes back at least 6,000 years when people started to settle the place due to its amazing geographical location: situated on the river Rhine in a fertile river valley, but one a terrace and on hills protected from the annual floods, at the centre of continental trade routes that connect the Mediterranean with Skandinavia and the Atlantic with eastern Europe.
