HOA Demanded I Remove My Antenna Array Then Realized I Run Emergency Communications for FEMA
HOA Demanded I Remove My Antenna Array Then Realized I Run Emergency Communications for FEMA
"That godforsaken metal monstrosity has to come down, Major Callahan, and it has to come down by Friday, or the fines will be one thousand dollars a day, retroactive to the date of installation." The voice belonged to Karen Vance, President of the Northgate Estates Homeowners Association, a woman whose physical presence was as imposing as her sense of entitlement. She stood on my freshly sodded lawn, her floral-print muumuu straining against the humid Carolina air, one hand planted firmly on a hip that seemed to have its own gravitational pull, the other clutching a clipboard like a scepter. Her face, a mask of righteous indignation flushed pink from the effort of walking the thirty yards from her own driveway, was framed by a helmet of peroxide-blonde hair that hadn't moved since the Reagan administration. Behind me, rising from a newly poured concrete base near the side of my house, was the object of her fury: a forty-foot telescoping aluminum tower, currently retracted to a modest twenty feet, supporting a multi-band Yagi antenna and a discone VHF/UHF array. To her, it was a monstrosity. To me, it was a lifeline, a complex instrument of communication that represented the culmination of my thirty-year career in the Army Signal Corps and the cornerstone of my new life as a federal contractor. It was the reason I’d bought this specific half-acre lot, chosen for its elevation and clear line of sight. And I had the paperwork, thick as a phone book, to prove its legality, its necessity, and its federal protection. But I had a feeling none of that would matter to the woman currently treating my property like a hostile beachhead.
