BEd School Placement DCU
Megan Maguire and Louise Hendy, students in DCU's Institute of Education, discuss their school placement experiences on the Bachelor of Education.
Meg Maguire is a Bachelor of Education (BEd) student in DCU Institute of Education. Meg’s major specialism is Special and Inclusive Education. She tells us about her experience of undertaking school placement in a variety of settings and how coursework and school placement is connected.
Louise Hendy is a third year Bachelor of Education (BEd) student. Louise describes the extensive professional experiences she has had undertaking school placement in a variety of settings. She indicates the many opportunities which school placement offers the BEd student to develop skills, understanding and competencies in school settings and she indicates the sharing of practice that occurs with cooperating teachers.
School Placement on the DCU BEd offers you the opportunity to undertake placement in a variety of educational settings. The range of experiences can include placements in:
Primary schools in urban settings
Primary schools in rural settings
Multigrade settings
Gaelscoileanna agus Scoileanna Gaeltachta
Special schools
Specialised classes/units in primary settings
School Placement allows you to spend time in schools in each year, with an extended full-semester placement in Year 4. You will start by observing the class teacher and will build up gradually to teaching all day. Throughout your placements, you will be supported by both faculty and school staff.
School Placement is closely connected with your coursework. You'll be part of a small study group (a tutorial group) and this will give you a chance to share your experiences of school placement. You will cover the basics needed for teaching in Years 1 and 2. In Year 3, you will review what you have learned to date and will apply it in different situations. Year 4 focuses on deepening your expertise and developing your research skills.
