Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley's Media Conference On COVID-19 - Saturday 2nd October, 2021
Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley acknowledged that we are in the “most dangerous stage” as the Delta Variant is now in the community and has been detected in persons with no travel history. He said there are 300,000 to 350,000 people who remain unvaccinated but could be vaccinated if they choose to be. He stated that COVID-19 vaccines are available and the best way to treat with the virus as they will help keep people out of the ICUs and avoid death.
Monday October 4th, 2021 remains the day for vaccinated Forms 4-6 students to return to school.
Prime Minister Rowley said once the plateauing of COVID-19 cases continues to mid-October, Government will consider:
Reopening of beaches.
Resumption of certain sporting activities.
Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi addressed the issue of the Safe Zones which open on October 11th. Among the business Safe Zones are restaurants, bars, common gaming houses, cinemas or theatres, private members clubs, gyms, fitness studios, and water parks.
The AG noted that the current Public Health Regulations expire on Monday October 4th, 2021, but will be updated this weekend. The updated Regulations will deal with schools and Safe Zones.
Owners/Operators of Safe Zones must ensure their employees are vaccinated. However, there is an exception for unvaccinated employees who must have a Medical Exemption Certificate, or a Medical Deferral Certificate issued through the public health system only.
Medical Exemption Certificate: The holder of this certificate is unable to be vaccinated for specified medical reasons.
Medical Deferral Certificate: The holder of this certificate is unable to be vaccinated for a specific period of time (pregnancy, breastfeeding, immuno-compromised).
All patrons at the Safe Zones must be vaccinated and must walk with proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Children under 12 will not be allowed in the Safe Zones.
Police officers and public health officers will be visiting the Safe Zones to ensure employers, employees and patrons comply. People must be masked in the Safe Zones and must continue to follow the health protocols.
