We did not want to show all aspects of a boiler service out of concern that people would want to try to service their own appliances. You should never attempt work on a gas burning appliance unless qualified.
The warranty issued with your boiler is generally reliant on an annual service by a qualified person. If you want to keep your warranty, which with some manufacturers runs for more than seven years, you must have your boiler serviced to keep the warranty valid.
Modern condensing boilers contain a lot of expensive quite complex parts; if they need replacing you will be glad of a current guarantee.

service or work on your boiler. Check their ID card which will tell you if they are qualified. This advice is for your safety, a faulty boiler is a very dangerous appliance to have in your home. There a many documented cases of fatalities caused by faulty boilers.
Keep your boiler manual handy, there is a huge range of boilers available and although it is more than likely your engineer will be familiar with the one you have installed there is a small chance it might be of a type he is not conversant with.
There is more technical information in the manuals than anyone could be expected to carry in their heads.

After an initial check to make sure the boiler is situated and installed correctly the engineer will do a short series of tests to ensure it is igniting correctly. Next he will remove the cover and do a visual inspection of the electrical components and pipework checking for faulty connections or weeping joints.
A careful check of the heat exchanger is the next item. This is one of the more vulnerable components especially on modern boilers.
This is normally the stage at which minor faults will be detected and dealt with before they develop into something more serious and expensive.
Next the engineer will check the inlet gas pressure to ensure that it is at the correct level to facilitate the safe operation of the boiler.
Then the condensate trap is removed and any debris collected washed out. This gives a good indication of the cleanliness of water in your system and whether or not you need to consider a magnetic filter system which will protect your expensive boiler for its life.
The final check of the inspection is one of the most important. After it has been burning for a period and the heat exchanger is operating he will do an exhaust gas analysis which will indicate whether or not the boiler is combusting properly.
On completion of all checks and repairs, if needed, the engineer will replace the boiler cover and fill in a safety sheet checklist as a record of what he has done. Keep this with the manual.
