HOW TO TEACH A DOG TO GREET PEOPLE POLITELY

When your dog goes crazy and loses all self-control every time he sees a person, it can be difficult to teach proper introductions to say the least!

However, with practice, it IS attainable to take an excited and distracted dog and train him to have proper manners when meeting new people like shown in this video!

Here are a few key steps I use with all of my clients to redirect focus back to you (the owner) and promote calm and controlled greetings!

1️⃣ First off, never allow your dog to run at and jump up on someone. Jumping is a self-rewarding behavior that elevates your dog’s excitement and makes it harder to bring him back down to a calm state.

2️⃣ To prevent jumping, take away the opportunity by starting off every introduction with your dog leashed at your side.

3️⃣ When your dog begins to get excited, redirect his focus to you using a treat or other reward (such as a toy) and make him sit. Your dog should be sitting while facing you, not looking back at that person.

4️⃣ Once you have your dog’s full focus, tell him to “Go say Hi” to that person.

5️⃣ Let him greet that person for a few quick seconds and then call him back to you immediately to receive a treat. You want to allow a quick greeting but not too much so that your dog loses self-control.

6️⃣ The more and more you practice this, you’ll notice that you can extend the time of the greeting while your dog maintains self-control.

It’s super important to note here that making “go say hi” a command is the ultimate goal! It makes YOU the end goal in this exercise instead of the other person, which will make your dog more controlled around other people/dogs and promote polite greetings.
