Catch ‘em All! Pokemon, Television, & Perfection Culture | Daniel Owens | TEDxValparaisoUniversity

The media of the millennial and Gen Z generations has directly contributed to both higher rates of mental illness and unhealthy mindsets. From the tagline of Pokemon's "Gotta Catch em All!" to the portrayal of love in both children's media (Disney), media, specifically children's media, the expectations and thought processes of these generations have been fundamentally changed in a way that is resulting in lower life satisfaction and general happiness. As we have grown up, so have systems like social media that both capitalizes on these ingrained unhealthy thought patterns and exacerbates them. The presentation would also talk about both what is being done and what we can do to fight back against the constant bombardment of "perfection culture" to begin shifting mindsets back to grounded ones that are connected to higher satisfaction of life, both for ourselves, but more importantly, for those around us.
