With the Sonderklasse designation starting in 1972 with the W116 model, the S-Class name has been the flagship luxury line of Mercedes-Benz.

The S-Class is well known for introducing many of the common safety and drivetrain technologies found on many cars today.

While the initial W220 Series was introduced in August 1998 for the 1999 model year, Steve Mattin first drew the initial design sketch in 1992, with a full-scale model appearing in 1994. The exterior design was previewed at the 1996 Paris Motor Show in the form of the F200 Imagination. The W220 would be the first Mercedes to feature Side Curtain Airbags.

2002 would feature new clear lens headlamps and redesigned tail lamps, the PreSafe pre-collision avoidance system, Electronic Stability Control and LED brake lamps, which illuminate faster than traditional incandescent bulbs.

The S Class features a fully adaptive dampening AirMatic air suspension as standard, while this S600 is equipped with Active Body Control, a more advanced system better suited for more spirited driving.
