Haying Season 2020

Unedited archive of clips from our 2020 haying season, in the hills of Conway, MA - equipment operation interspersed with some commentary and discussion.

2020 was an interesting year, with a bit of a drought here in Western MA. This meant some *amazing* hay stretches, but overall about 80% yields compared to a "normal" season. (This meant we actually made fewer bales than 2019 despite an acreage increase.)

2020 was also the first full season with the MF 275 in action. Having two tractors of about the same size (65 HP & 75 hp) gave us a newfound sense of logistical flexibility this year. Both could handle all equipment easily - though we established a preference for mowing/raking with the 165 (better visibility), and tedding/baling with the 275 (the added "Low 4" gear was a big help when baling lighter fields). The 135, our trusty little droid with whom we certainly have been through a lot together, tended to play "chaser" with the fertilizer spreader at the previous batch of fields as we swung our flying circus through town, and be backup in case one of the big tractors went down.
