The Many Dangers of Music: A lecture by Richard Taruskin

In the 2016 Lloyd Old Lecture, a project of Music in 21st-Century Society, Richard Taruskin gives this lecture on "The Many Dangers of Music." Taruskin provokes debate, asking, what is the artist’s relationship and obligation to society? The lecture includes a brief response by Professor Scott Burnham and a performance by pianist Adam Kent.

Music in 21st –Century Society is a series of talks and debates by major cultural figures addressing the changing consumption, creation, contexts, and valuations of today’s music. They are presented annually in midtown Manhattan by the Barry S. Brook Center for Music Research and Documentation of the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (Fifth Avenue @ 34th Street).
