Although these traditional rulers do not hold formal political powers, they are well respected in the society and are quite influential. Oba is also used by the Yoruba peoples to refer to their various rulers, though other titles such as Ooni, Alake, Alaafin, Olomu, Orangun, Olu'wo, Eleko, In the southeast, Obi, Igwe and Eze are common titles among Igbo rulers.

Oba Rilwan Babatunde Osuolale Aremu Akiolu of lagos is one of the richest kings in Nigeria with an estimated net worth of $40million dollars. Before his ascension to the throne, he graduated from the University of Lagos, bagging a Bachelor of Laws degree (LL.B). He also served in the Nigerian Police force for 35 years before attaining the status of Assistant Inspector General of Police before retirement in 2002. His palace is said to be worth N2billion and the Oba of Lagos is also a first-class traditional ruler and one of the most powerful kings in Africa.
