Hondo Texas Tornadic Storm - April 28, 2021
NEW - From the Storm Prediction Center website: Initially, this was thought to be nothing more than straight line winds.
A NWS STORM SURVEY TEAM FOUND EVIDENCE OF AN EF1 TORNADO WITH MAX WINDS OF 110 MPH THAT WAS ON THE GROUND FOR ALMOST 2 MILES. PLEASE VIEW THE PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEM (EWX).
The EF1 tornado had maximum wind speeds of 110 mph, was on the ground for 8 minutes for a distance of 1.82 miles and was 600 yards wide. It touched down 4 miles SSE from where this video was shot. It's my guess that the wall cloud was crossing U.S. 90 around three and a half minutes into the video.

The day started out hot and muggy with steady winds. The SPC was forecasting a "slight" risk of severe storms which was later upgraded to "enhanced." I'm a survivor of the 1957 Ruskin Heights tornado, an F5 that took a lot of lives. I've chased off and on over the years, my last one being Hallum, Nebraska in 2004, and although I still enjoy the thrill of the chase, I can't afford it like I could before I retired.
I got home around 5:30 p.m. and clicked on Radar Scope to see what was happening and saw 4 storm cells had popped up around Del Rio and were moving east along U.S. 90. What started out as a succession of smaller cells quickly grew into two large cells that began to rotate so I decided to seek shelter for my truck in hopes of avoiding the 4 inch diameter hail they were forecasting and capture some video.
I took a spot on the west-bound shoulder of U.S. 90, under the state highway 173 bridge that crosses over. To my immediate north were the many bridge abutments that support the ramp from 173 down onto 90 and the railroad track where a train was sitting on the siding. I figured there was enough concrete between myself and the train if we were to experience a large tornado. As it turned out, it probably broke a lot of wind that switched around from the north as the storm passed just south of me.
The SPC website has no reports of a tornado but the local San Antonio stations are calling it a tornado. If you have any information or awesome photos from a better vantage point, please share them. Enjoy!
