There are many things to look for when purchasing a used vehicle. Does the motor use oil? Is there anything leaking or dripping from underneath the vehicle? Does the transmission shift properly? Are they asking too much money and has it been well-maintained? You should always check tires and vehicle paint, check for visible rust and anything else that can cause an expense down the road, but depending on the state where the vehicle originated from, there’s also something else you may consider checking. This is something that is usually not even considered and easily overlooked. It's something that is not prone to just one manufacturer. It seems to affect them all, but it does seem to affect only certain years which seems to vary from manufacturer. This affects mostly older vehicles, but could for newer ones as well. We’ve had to replace the frame of a 2010 because of the value of the vehicle. Usually if the frame is rotted you’re going to be dealing with a lot of broken bolts and brake lines, headaches, etc. Fixing a rusted frame can be a costly process. Depending on the vehicle make and model, expenses can range from $2000-$4000 and sometimes even more. The reason why it's so expensive is that the labor to repair a rusty frame can be incredibly time-consuming, which will depend on the severity of the rust. Sometimes with an older vehicle it may be more cost efficient to just scrap the vehicle. A vehicle with a rotted frame is never safe to drive on the road. Anything of course can be fixed, it just depends if the vehicle is worth sticking the money into it.
