From start to finish, Brian Cowen’s government faced unprecedented economic and political upheaval. The failure of the Irish banking system and the subsequent bailout, coupled with a worldwide economic downturn, made things go from bad to worse for a government that many believed had been handed a poisoned chalice.

Throughout this two-part documentary series, senior ministers from Cowen’s government speak candidly about how major decisions were taken and what they thought of his leadership.

Written and narrated by political editor and author of Showtime Pat Leahy, the series explores how the party that dominated Irish politics since the foundation of the State was decimated in the General Election of 2011, opening the door for a new political landscape.
