"My dad, as his age progressed, found that he needed more help with activities of daily living at home. We were looking for alternatives, and to what to do with our parents.

They really love being here: they love the setting and the house, the neighborhood. This is the place they've lived for over 30 years and they felt connected here.

As we discussed options with them, they both felt that they wanted to spend the rest of their lives in this house. Having the help at home when he needed it, but still allowed him to get out and do things.

When the aide came in and was non-judgemental, it provided a whole level of relaxation and comfort. I saw my dad enjoying himself more and less preoccupied with some of the day-to-day activities, and yet it also allowed him to pursue some of his hobbies, and communications with his family via email, which he enjoyed.

At the end, we had very frank conversations about his goals and about his plans, and I think it became clear to him that he was approaching the end of life. He couldn't do all of the things that were important to him, but he was in a loving and caring environment. The night that he had serious trouble breathing, I said "Dad, do you want to go to the hospital?" He said, "No, can you just help me get up to bed?" He passed in his sleep that night.

With the support of Fellowship Village and their senior living at home program, he had a wonderful end of his life."
