Deh ti piega, deh consenti (Vivaldi) Topi Lehtipuu
Deh ti piega, deh consenti from La fida ninfa, RV 714
by Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741)
Topi Lehtipuu as Narete
Ensemble Matheus under Jean-Christophe Spinosi
Deh ti piega, deh consenti,
mira il pianto, odi i lamenti,
e ti muova oro, o pietà.
In sciagure sì infelici, i
n disastri sì funesti
anche tu cader potresti,
anche noi fummo felici,
ma sua sorte uomo non sà.
Ah, I beg you, consent to my request:
See our tears, hear our laments,
And be moved either by gold or by pity.
Into such dreadful misfortunes,
Such dismal disasters,
You also might fall;
We too were happy,
But no one can know his destiny.
[Translation by Charles Johnston]
from the liner notes:
“In this gem of Baroque vocalism, Vivaldi conveys the heartrending imploration of the old shepherd at his oppressor’s feet with startling intensity through the use of a syncopated motif tirelessly repeated by the violins while the voice chants its prayer in adagio tempo, then breaks down in jerky vocalises, poignant sobs decorating the key words lamenti and pianto.” - Frédéric Delaméa
