History of the Vietnamese Dong

The first Vietnamese Dong was first introduced in 1978 after the unification of North and South Vietnam. As time went on the denominations started getting larger. This would be the start of hyperinflation in the country. Eventually the first series of Dong banknotes were replaced by a second series and eventually new larger issues were released as time progressed. In the early 2000’s new polymer banknotes were issued, and they are still in circulation. The durability and added security features of polymer make the material very attractive for Central Banks. The current largest denomination banknote is the blue 500,000 Dong. It features former leader Ho Chi Minh on the front as do all other current banknotes.
