Ribblehead Viaduct Easy Walking Guide | Yorkshire Dales National Park, English Countryside Walk

Our our latest Yorkshire Walking Guide we will show you how to complete the Ribblehead Viaduct circular route. This beautiful-but-easy English countryside walk is set in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Walking Guide Transcript:

The Ribblehead Viaduct is an impressive man made structure that towers over Batty Moss in the Ribble Valley at Ribblehead, in North Yorkshire, England. In this video we will show you how to complete a beautiful but easy circular walk that both starts and ends at the Ribblehead Viaduct. This walk is around 3.5 miles long, and will take approximately 2 hours to complete, depending on how long you spend admiring the viaduct and getting distracted by the sheep. While this is an easy walk, it is worth noting that there are some areas of uneven ground, and this route does involve climbing over a few styles.

First, getting to the Ribblehead viaduct. If you are driving, set your destination to the car park where the B6255 (Blea Moor Road) meets the B6479 (Gauber Road). Parking here is free, although if you arrive at a popular time you should arrive as early as you can. Ribblehead train station is a short walk away if you won’t be driving.

From the layby car park, follow the path towards the viaduct - you can’t miss it! Once you reach the viaduct take some time to get a closer look at the incredible 24 arches. Opened in 1875, the 440-yard-long Ribblehead Viaduct is the most magnificent structure on the settle-carlisle railway.

Following the signs to Whernside, continue to follow the path up the gentle ascent, leaving the viaduct behind you. Keeping the railway on your left, keep following the path until you reach an underpass, where a sign will point you towards Winterscales. This will be the direction you will be going, however we continued a bit further along the path to get a closer look at the isolated Blea Moor Signal box, before turning back and heading through the underpass towards Winterscales farm. As you follow the path down the rock lined beck bubbles along on your right - just keep following it down until you reach the first farm of your walk.

Walk directly through the farm, crossing over a stone bridge. Once you are over the bridge the path veers to the left, and you continue to follow it until the path splits off to the left. Ignore this turn off as this takes you back to the viaduct. You will see a sign to scar end pointing you in the right direction. Continue straight down the path, through the fields until you reach Ivescar farm. Walk to the end of the large metal barn and turn left, walking between the two buildings into a field. A public footpath sign will point you in the right direction to cross the fields diagonally, climbing over several styles on the way.

It won’t be long until you glimpse the Ribblehead Viaduct off in the distance. We were lucky to catch a glimpse of a train passing over on a couple of occasions, which was a more exciting site than the camera probably let’s on! After taking in the view walk down the hill, keeping the stone wall and viaduct on your left, until you meet a road path. Take this path left until you reach the large Gunnerfleet farm. The path will take you through the farm, and back towards the viaduct.

You end your walking by passing underneath the might arches of the viaduct, before returning to the car park.
