Charlotte towing company penalized for alleged racial discrimination, price gouging

North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson announced Monday a judgment against a Charlotte towing company owner accused of racially targeting drivers and charging excessive fees during the COVID-19 pandemic.

David Jewel Satterfield and his companies, A1 Towing Solutions and Automobile Recovery and Parking Enforcement, must pay $30,000 in restitution to victims and face significant operational restrictions under the judgment, according to the state Department of Justice.

The case marks North Carolina's first judgment in a discriminatory towing case, according to the attorney general's office.

The Department of Justice sued Satterfield in 2020 for allegedly booting and towing trucks delivering food, water, and medical supplies during the pandemic, then charging up to $4,000 for vehicle release. In some instances, drivers presented written parking permits or parked before Satterfield installed towing notices, but their vehicles were still towed, according to the complaint. #News #Towing
