Dahlia Varieties - Over 50 different Flowers and 7 Flower Types - Plus Growing Tips

In this video we visit the Country Dahlias and explore the many varieties in the collection of Jenny Parish.

Having grown Dahlias for over 30 years Jenny Parish from Country Dahlias in Winchelsea opens her garden during Dahlia Flowering time which is in summer. For those who cant’t get to the open garden, or who are just interested in dahlias we take a look at different types of flowers that Dahlias have offer,

In a seperate video we will look at how to plant the tubers or bulbs and also talk about general care for Dahlias.

Dahlias are classified into different groups and these are determined by the flower shape and size. Although there are 1000s of individual types of Dahlias they all fall into groups such as
Singles. Simply a single row of petals around a central stamen, petal shape can vary a little, usually 7 petals.

The next group are the Cactus types, best described as with long spiky petals, these have petals that are curved inwardly or outwardly and give the flowers a ‘spiky’ look. These are divided into small, medium and large cactus dahlias.
Semi cactus have the same curved petals, however not as tightly curved,
Pompon Dahlias are as the name suggests, again curved petals arranged in a spiral, however forming rounded spheres or pompons.

Ball Dahlias are larger than the pompons and have a sort of spiral arrangement.

Waterlily Dahlias have flowers that are wide and open and look like water lilies, very popular for flower arrangements

Anemone dahlia sort of like a pincushion in the centre with a row of petals around the outside, so two types of petals, tubular in the centre surrounded by a ring of flatter petals.
Decorative Dahlias have fully double petals, no obvious central disc and again come in sizes from small to large,

Collarette

As the name suggest s, that have an open centre, two lots of petals, flattened in a ring on the outside, a collar of smaller slightly ruffled on the inside and a central disc.

Fimbriated

Fully double flowers, with the petals forked in to two or more points, no central disc.

Orchid dahlias have a single row of petals that go to points and a central disc, however, double orchid types also exist.
