Why are so many artists mentally ill?

Are successful artists more depressed than the average person, or does it only seem like that?

The trope of the “tortured artist” is very strong. Just think of Van Gogh or Sylvia Plath (or Edvard Munch, Charles Dickens, Virginia Woolf, Tchaikovsky, Frida Kahlo, etc) and BOOM — it seems like depression and creativity belong together.

Researchers have tried to determine if there is a real link and found the results to be mostly inconclusive with some types of artists more likely to be mentally ill and others are less likely.

Christa Taylor of SUNY Albany found that bipolar disorder is most often associated with creativity while PDD (persistent depressive disorder) was NOT associated with creativity. Those with MDD (major depressive disorder) tend to be more creative though.

It is suspected that the high-pressure and hectic lifestyles of many artists lead to depressive symptoms.

According a study from 2013, the brain engaged in a creative pursuit may closely resemble the brain of someone with a psychiatric disorder.

Taylor stated:


What IS known is that creativity can be an incredibly positive outlet for people in mental distress with art therapy being often prescribed for victims of trauma. People with mood disorders may also instinctively turn to art to help cope and heal.

I know that personally I can get really into coloring when I’m very stressed.
