A Bird's Eye View from a window overlooking the action in George Square, Glasgow, Scotland.

On the 23rd of April 2017 hundreds of cyclists performed their annual bike ride to campaign for safer cycling within the city of Glasgow.

This video ends with a pair of dancing pigeons, presumably part of their mating ritual.

In my humble opinion, the single biggest problem with cycling is where do you keep your bike? I live in a flat, so a bike would take up precious space. Even if there was somewhere out of the way to store my bike, which is also safe from thieves, where would I park it when I get to work? Or the pub? Or the super market? And what's to stop it being stolen? Solve this and I may start to use a bike. Until then I'll be driving my car. There's plenty of car parking everywhere and car crime is down. I also work away from home. Bikes on trains? What if everyone took their bike?

Another problem is Road Tax. The councils aren't fixing the roads, despite taking a fortune off drivers in road tax. If we dump the cars and take up cycling would the cyclist be prepared to pay the road tax instead? I doubt it. Most cyclists wouldn't pay to lock their bikes up near work, like drivers do. They expect to be able to chain them up for free, or put them in the kitchen at work and get in everyone else's way.

I propose the answer is not bikes, but skateboards, roller skates and scooters. Unfortunately skateboarding is something that is deemed antisocial and the police don't take a kind view on any of us skaters riding around the cities. However, a skateboard fits neatly under your desk at work. It's easy to take a skateboard on the train. And it's extremely easy to keep your skateboard inside your flat. In 33 years of skateboarding I have never, ever had my skateboard stolen. And skateboarding is even better for the environment than cycling. They're made from less materials and you don't see 'skateboard frames' chained to bike rails without any wheels. I'll even bet there are less skateboards in the local rivers than there are bikes. And the best, you don't need special 'Skateboard paths', we'll be happy on the pavements.

Any way, I'm not anti-cycling, good luck with the campaign.
Once the city is filled with cycle paths I'll be able to skate through it a lot easier.
