Motivation at work according to Maslow (1943)

Management & Leadership Luxury Hotelschool Paris - The hierarchy of needs in itself is not sufficient to explain motivation at work. First, Maslow adds a rule: a need appears only when all preceding needs in the hierarchy are fulfilled. But where's the link with motivation? Motivation arises from the fourth need, the need for esteem. When an employee feels this need, then to get the esteem of his colleagues and superiors, he is inclined to work well, to work hard, this is a good definition of motivation. It is thus necessary to fulfill the first three needs and in particular the need for belonging.

Abraham Maslow published A Theory of Human Motivation in 1943:
Maslow, A.H., 1943. A theory of human motivation. Psychological review, 50(4), p.370.
