I was told by some locals; "Do not go to Port Area, Manila...it's too dangerous!" It's a Manila Slum.
Well, little did they know, that statement would only make me more curious. I decided to 'risk my life' and walk through. I chose to leave my money and camera equipment at the hotel.
I had only walked around for about 45 minutes when I stumbled in to these amazing people. The children, always the first point of contact due to their curiosity, invited me inside their internet Cafe. There, I met a local man who spoke great English.
After we got to know each other a bit - I asked if it was OK if I brought my camera equipment back the next day and filmed a bit...just to give people an idea of what it's like to exist in a Squatters' area.
These were extremely kind people and quite appreciative of simply spending time with some of them. Crazy to think that something so small can go such a long way.
I encourage anyone visiting the Philippines to visit a place like this.
Remember, most don't speak English, but they all speak 'body language'. If your body language shows fear and hesitation...they will have the same. If you show kindness, smiles, and confidence, they will show the same.
Be open. Be kind. Be courteous.
Enjoy your cultural exchange!! 🤗
