Confidence Games

Maria Konnikova is a journalist and author, currently a contributing writer for The New Yorker. In her presentation she discusses the sinister methods of con artists and the vulnerabilities they take exploit in their victims, which is the topic of her most recent book, The Confidence Game: Why We Fall For It…Every Time. Konnikova says we all have stories about ourselves and the world around us that we desperately want to believe. “In the wrong hands, stories can be a force for evil,” she says. “Con artists are actors, they are storytellers.”

Konnikova is the winner of the 2016 Balles Prize in Critical Thinking for The Confidence Game, which she will accept at CSICon 2017 in Las Vegas. See csiconference.org for more.

This conversation took place as CSICon Las Vegas on Friday, October 28th, 2016.
