How Hitler Pulled America Into the European War

When the United States entered World War II, many people assume it immediately went to war with Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy.

But that’s not what actually happened.

After Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the U.S. Congress declared war only on Japan. At that moment, America was not yet at war with Germany or Italy.

Just four days later, on December 11, Adolf Hitler made a critical decision: Germany declared war on the United States. Benito Mussolini followed immediately, declaring war as well.

This move shocked many German generals. Hitler wasn’t required by treaty to attack the U.S., but he believed America was already acting as an enemy through Lend-Lease aid to Britain and the Soviet Union — and he badly underestimated American industrial power.

By declaring war first, Germany and Italy forced the United States fully into the European conflict, uniting the American public behind a two-front war.

It was one of the most consequential strategic mistakes of World War II — and a decision that helped seal the fate of the Axis powers.
