What is SEO? Search Engine Optimisation Explained | The 4 Pillars of SEO (Rocket Edition!)
Since we throw the word 'launch' around so much in the digital space (and with the launch excitement of NASA’s Artemis 2 mission), we decided a rocket would be the perfect metaphor to visually explain what SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) activity actually consists of.
There are many business owners and stakeholders who still think about SEO like it’s a 'boring dark art'. With all the current chaos around AI and Large Language Models (LLMs), it's easy to see why anyone would stick their head in the sand when it comes to thinking about it. But, honestly, understanding SEO at its core isn’t a minefield. The best way to understand SEO activity is by categorising it by the traditional ‘Four Pillars of SEO’.
If imagine that your website & it's SEO is the rocket, here is how it works:
🚀 Technical SEO: This is the physical and technical build. If your site isn't fast, secure, and structurally sound, you aren't getting off the launch pad.
🎯 On-site SEO: Your guidance and boost system. Getting your page structure and context right tells search engines exactly where you are aiming; boosting you towards it.
⛽ Content: The fuel. You need a 'deep tank' of genuinely helpful, expert, information to give your site the energy to move (and be found).
🔥 Off-site SEO: The ignition and acceleration. When other trusted, authoritative websites link back to you, it gives search engines the proof they need to launch you past the competition.
