Meet Mariama - Amputee Teacher

Mariama is a Gambian amputee, she is an inspirational school teacher who explains how she lost her leg and the impact it has had on her life and the way people treat her. We met Mariama Mjie when visiting West Africa with the charity Legs4Africa and interviewed her. Her outlook on life is beautiful and touching.

In this new series of videos Legs4Africa is proud to introduce the people that your aid helps. A weekly insight into people who, without your help, struggle to lead full and rewarding lives. It is such a simple thing to walk and to be mobile and yet something that is denied to so many amputees in Africa.

These videos show you real people with real lives. They don’t want you to give them sympathy, they just want you to understand and to help restore their freedom to move, a freedom that, without the work of Legs4Africa, would not exist.

This series of short interviews lets you into the lives of the people you help and it’s not just the amputees, it relieves the burden on families, giving people back their dignity and letting them not have to ask for help every step of the way.

These people want to lead normal lives, they want to do as their friends and family do, as you do, they don’t want to ask for help any more.

A charity that is dedicated to collecting unwanted and unused prosthetic legs and mobility equipment from hospitals and individuals around the UK and sends them to West Africa. Once there, they are given to trusted mobility centres that will then refit them to amputees. We currently partner with units in Gambia, Senegal and Guinea Bissau and will be extending our reach further through 2015.

The charity was registered in October 2014 and we have so far sent over 1500 prosthetics to the region, positively changing the lives of the differently able.

And as Mariama says, differently able does not mean unable!
