How to read IP Ratings for lighting products

Most people see an IP rating as just a few letters and numbers on a datasheet.

In reality, it tells you a lot about whether a luminaire is designed to withstand the environment it will operate in.

IP stands for Ingress Protection. The first digit indicates protection against solid particles such as dust, while the second indicates protection against water.

For underwater lighting, that second number is critical.

In this video, we explain what IP ratings mean, how they are classified, and why they play such an important role in long-term lighting performance.

You’ll learn:
• What the two digits in an IP rating represent
• The difference between common IP classifications
• Why IP ratings matter in underwater and outdoor lighting
• How protection ratings relate to reliability and durability

At Filix, an IP rating is not simply a specification on a datasheet. It is one of the first indicators of whether a luminaire is built for real operating conditions.

But a rating alone is only part of the story.

In the next video, we’ll take you behind the scenes and show how IP testing is performed in practice.
