How to Build a Workbench. Build this Cheap, Sturdy Workbench for your Garage. A workbench is a must for your garage or shed. When it comes to building a workbench l needed to satisfy three criteria. The workbench was required to be tough, cheap to build (second hand or reclaimed materials are fine. It doesn't have to look pretty as pretty soon it is going to be trashed) and sturdy enough to take a beating without falling to bits.

Tools and Materials Required for this Project. Bench approx. 2.2 metres long, 700mm wide and 1.0 metre high.

For the legs: 90mm x 35mm (4 x 1½") pine. Two at 3.6metres (approx 11' 12". I think that reads 11 feet, 12 inches)
For the frame: 90mm x 35mm (4" x 1 ½") Eight at 2.4metres (8 feet)
For the edge trimming: 42mm x 19mm dressed pine. Six at 2.4metres (8 feet)
Ply for bench top and shelf: One sheet at 2.4metres (8 feet) x 1.2metres (47 inches) x 17mm.
Bolts for frame: Eight cuphead bolts at 100mm (4 inches) x 10mm with washers and nuts.
Screws to assemble the workbench: 120 x 65mm Phillips head screws.

Dimensions of Workbench:
Overall width of bench top including pine trim: 690mm (27 inches)
Overall length of benchtop: 2.0metres (78 ½ inches)
Overall height of workbench including the 17mm benchtop: 900mm (35 ½ inches)
Overall width of frame: 570mm ( 22 ½ inches)
Overall length of frame: 1880mm (6' 2 inches)
Overall height of workbench leg (which includes the top rail as it is checked into the leg) 880mm (34 ½ inches)

Tools:
Handsaw, circular saw or drop saw.
Powered or cordless drill.
10mm (4 inch) drill bit.
1/8th countersinking drill bit.
No.2 Phillips Head bit.
Spanner to tighten nuts.
Set Square
Builders Square
Tape Measure
Pencil
Spirit Level
Wood workers Glue.
