Qld govt ‘didn’t have an appetite’ for a new stadium for 2032 Olympics

Former Brisbane mayor Graham Quirk says the Queensland Miles government “didn’t have an appetite” for a new stadium and “were looking for a plan b” for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

A federal inquiry has found the Queensland government is yet to begin tangible preparations for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.

It heard the Miles government had begun a ‘shadow review’ before former lord mayor Graham Quirk had finalised a 60-day venue review the premier asked him to lead.

Mr Quirk told the hearing he had been ‘blindsided’ by the move.

“We were advised that government didn’t have a new appetite for a new stadium, and they then obviously were looking for plan b.

“They knew we were going to be recommending a new stadium,” Mr Quirk told Sky News Australia.

“The panel was unanimous in terms of that view.”
