Eight witnesses testified during a pretrial hearing to decide whether the case against Kevin Mays Jr

Eight witnesses testified during a pretrial hearing to decide whether the case against Kevin Mays Jr., a former Cal State Bakersfield assistant basketball coach, should move to trial. Prosecutors say Mays is linked to pimping, drug distribution, firearms violations and possession of child pornography. Kern County Deputy District Attorney Christine Antonios outlined an evidentiary trail she said supported pursuing felony and misdemeanor charges. The materials included online sex advertisements, text messages, cellphone images, hotel receipts and various financial records. Prosecutors argued the evidence establishes probable cause and demonstrates a pattern of illicit activity, enough to warrant a criminal trial. Judge J. Eric Bradshaw heard arguments on whether the case should proceed and how the charges could be presented at trial. The hearing was described as outlining how the pandering case could play out in court, with defense counsel likely to challenge the evidence and the charges as the process continues.
