If you’re familiar with 80s metal, you’ll recognize the scale in this video lesson. It’s the natural A minor scale and has been used by bands such as Poison, Dokken, and Metallica. The notes of the scale are A-B-C-D-E-F-G-A. This scale is demonstrated here in two different ways, but since the notes are the same, you can combine the patterns as needed. The instructor also show you a classic metal rhythm pattern that utilizes open string patterns and power chords. You might want to record these patterns as a backing track to play the A minor metal scale lesson over. By applying this A minor scale to the backing pattern demonstrated, you’ll quickly recognize the sound of many of your favorite classic metal songs from the 80s. Take a look at the demonstration here and listen to the notes that give the scale it’s sound. If you really want to add some authenticity to it, the instructor suggests adding some of those effects that helped define the sound of 80s metal. Starting with a demonstration of the two patterns, the instructor walks you through the scale patterns then shows you how to combine them to create some classic metal licks using the A minor scale.
