THE RAILMOTOR RETURNS TO THE WEST COUNTRY - GWR RAILMOTOR No. 93 RETURNS TO GWR BRANCHES IN THE WEST

THE RAILMOTOR RETURNS TO THE WEST COUNTRY is a tribute to the unique GWR Steam Railmotor and its historic return to the West Country during Autumn 2012, Winter 2012 / 2013 and Spring 2013. Steam Railmotors were initially introduced by the London & South Western Railway, and were first trialed on the Southsea branch in June 1903. Churchward was so impressed by the railmotor concept that the GWR evaluated one on the Chalford service in Gloucestershire. Such was their success, that Churchward designed a fleet of branch and semi - suburban railmotors to work on the Great Western. Eventually, the GWR would have a fleet of 99 steam powered railmotors, together with a fleet of accompanying trailers to create the world's very first Steam Multiple Unit. GWR Railmotor No. 93 was built at Swindon in 1908, and was one of the very last railmotors to remain in GWR service, before being condemned on 19th November 1934 and converted into a conventional auto-trailer. This programme examines the history and development of the GWR Steam Railmotors during the unveiling of No. 93 in March 2011 at the Llangollen Railway. We then proceed to examine the historic visit of the GWR Railmotor to the Bodmin & Wenford Railway in Autumn 2012. Including on-train footage, we see No. 93 in action as she tackles the fierce 1 in 37 and 1 in 45 gradients of the Bodmin General and Boscarne Junction branches. Remaining in Cornwall, we review the Railmotor's return to the National Network, as filmed in breath-taking autumnal colours, No. 93 works a series of historic shuttles over the Looe branch for two consecutive weekends in November 2012. Next, we head to the South Devon Railway, as No. 93 makes her only visit to date to this typical West Country branch line, becoming the first railmotor to traverse this quintessential GWR branch since 1905!! Finally, we conclude with scenes of No. 93 working along the Minehead line in Somerset, during the West Somerset Somerset Branch Lines through the Ages Gala, concluding her whirlwind tour of the West! #GWRRailmotor #Railmotor #GreatWesternRailway
