Living our dream - Cruising Alaska aboard our trawler Sea Venture plus Q&A - EP 72

In this episode we spend most of our time in Thomas Bay, just north of Petersburg, Alaska. Thomas Bay was fantastic. It has two glaciers that feed the bay, a spectacular small inlet (Scenery Cove) and a great anchorage behind Ruth Island. We spent several days their anchored next to the NOAA Survey Ship, Rainier. From Thomas Bay we traveled past Petersburg, through the Wrangell Narrows and on to Wrangell.

Anchor Buddy: As we indicated in the video – we think this is a must have when cruising where there are large tidal exchanges. It works great, but it could be much better. Here is my honest opinion: It’s a product made for anchoring your boat / tender – in fact, it has no other purpose. They made the “D” ring and woven in snap hook out of inexpensive metal – and that’s being generous. It should be made to actually be in the water. You will find it rusts to an almost unusable state within a year or two. They should be making the ring and snap hook from stainless steel – 100% stainless steel, not regular steel springs or latches like you can find. I think it’s a no brainer, but it’s just my opinion. I would gladly pay more for the product. Several different companies seem to make these, but I have not found one yet that has SS parts. This is our trawler life story.

We retired early and decided to make a big change. We sold everything and moved aboard our 54' Cheoy Lee passagemaker, a “go anywhere in the world”, ocean going power boat.

That was in 2014 and we have never looked back. Now in our late 50's we are free of work and we are living aboard and cruising our trawler full time. We have two additional crew members, feline brothers, Blake and Barkley. Yes, we have two brave (sorta) boat cats, on board!

Join us and our crew, on our adventures as we explore new places, discover more about our trawler and what makes her work, and learn more about ourselves in our young retirement years. Our hope is to entertain and inspire you to pursue your own passions through telling our story of our cruising trawler lifestyle.
