Southern Pacific #18 "Retrieval" 4/10/19

Southern Pacific #18 breakdown photos and retrieval video.
The day before this video was shot the Southern Pacific #18 was climbing the 2.5% grade on Hermosa Hill just before the overpass when the engineer’s side piston broke and knocked a hole in the cylinder head. Many thanks to Olaf Rasmussen, long time railroad photographer for granting me permission to use his still photographs to tell this part of the story. The disabled locomotive was slowly pushed back and set out at Pinkerton Siding. The passengers and cars were pulled back to Durango by diesel #11.
The following morning Locomotive K36 #482 out of hibernation was sent to “Retrieve” the SP #18 and tow her backwards 15 miles back to Durango. I catch up with the 482 turning, on the tail of the wye at Rockwood. 3 hoppers and a gondola were picked up at Hermosa for additional braking on the way down for when out of view SP#18 gets picked up. Earlier in the morning roundhouse crew removed the damaged piston and rod. We first see the 18 in rear of train at Hermosa and see the undamaged cylinder. I continue to chase and pace to the Durango yard limit.
