A 1967 Longines dress watch. Reference 7272-1. Calibre 280. From the era when Longines competed directly with Omega and Rolex — before the Swatch Group acquisition changed everything. One of the finest hand-wound movements the brand ever produced. Here is the full unboxing, movement reveal and calliper measurement.

THE WATCH — LONGINES 7272-1

The Longines 7272 represents the golden age of Swiss dress watch design. Its 34mm stainless steel case, silver dial and elegant hands create a balanced and understated aesthetic perfect for formal occasions. With its manual wind Caliber 280 movement, this model captures Longines’ precision watchmaking philosophy of the 1960s and has become a favourite among collectors seeking a slim, wearable vintage timepiece. Serial number 12.538.181 dates this specific example to approximately 1967. Vertically brushed silver dial with applied gold baton hour markers and a double marker at 12 o’clock. Gold-toned tapered hands. Longines signature with winged hourglass logo. Swiss Made at the base of the dial. Plexiglass crystal — period correct and polishable. Unsigned crown. Brown leather strap — aftermarket, not original. Stainless steel case with age-appropriate wear after nearly 60 years.

THE BRAND IN CONTEXT

Longines holds the oldest registered trademark of any watch manufacturer in the world. In the 1950s and 60s Longines competed head to head with the very best Swiss watch manufacturers. It is really only within the past few years that Longines vintage watches have risen again to the admiration and popularity they deserve, with values rising by around 15-20% per year. Today Longines sits in the Swatch Group’s mid-range. In 1967 — this was a first-tier Swiss manufacturer. That context matters when you look at this watch.

THE MOVEMENT — CALIBRE 280

Manual wind mechanical movement. Diameter 26.5mm. Height 3.9mm. 17 jewels. 42-hour power reserve. 19,800 vph. Incabloc anti-shock system. The Calibre 280 is popularly regarded as one of the best in-house hand-wound movements Longines has ever made. When tested and calibrated this movement runs to within +8 seconds per day — outstanding for a vintage watch of this age. The mainspring sits in a sealed barrel unit. Collectors seek this calibre specifically.

THE HONEST NOTE ON PARTS

Parts for the Longines 280 are becoming increasingly rare and difficult to find. The fact that the Swatch Group has stopped selling parts to independent repairers does not help. Factor a service cost and parts availability into any buying decision on a vintage Longines with this calibre. Find a watchmaker who can confirm parts availability before committing.

THE CASEBACK

Snapback caseback — eight notched entry points around the perimeter. Movement reveal on camera. Calibre 280 signed Longines, Swiss Made, 17 Jewels, with calibre number visible on the movement.
