Spectre Big Boom Scratch Built RC Airplane

This is an overview of a scratch built Spectre RC airplane that blends a variety of design ideas I have gathered from watching other Youtube Videos.

I had a left over Experimental Airlines 60"Armin wing with a 7" root cord made from Dollar Tree Foamboard. It was originally flown on a Photon Slope soaring glider. After watching Andrew Newton’s great videos about his "Twin Boom Depron Spectre Motor Glider”, I was inspired to make one of my own. Instead of building something lighter that could slope, I decided to go for big and sturdy, so I used a powerful NTM 35_36 motor and designed things so that the plane could carry a GoPro and hold up longer than just foam and tape only construction.

For the fuselage I experimented with lining the inside of the foamboard tube with thin plywood, solar activated resin\fiberglass(Foam Safe Solarez for Epoxy). The fuselage core is filled with closed cell foam and pockets for the battery and electronics were created in the foam. After a couple of good crashes, the fuselage has ZERO wrinkles. Yes!!!

Instead of mounting the motor directly to the fuselage, I formed a raised joiner section between the two wing halves with foam, thin plywood and fiberglass. I mounted the motor on this raise section. This allows for a larger prop (10x6), puts the prop up into better airflow and provides ample clearance between the prop and ground. It also makes for safe hand launches.

Another unintended but beneficial thing about mounting the motor to the wing instead of the fuselage is that it separates the motor from the fuselage where the camera is mounted. I have been experimenting with placing spongy foam between the wing and the fuselage to further isolate any vibration of the motor/prop from the camera. It appears to help.

Total flying weight with 2200mAH battery and Mobius camera is 1560g
Wing is now a total of 65”, has a 7” root cord and a 9” total cord with control surfaces. There is a 10degree forward sweep on the wing.

Wing uses Hitec HS55 servos.
Dual rudder servos, Elevator servo, are Hobby King HTX900
