Black Sigatoka | How to Apply Fungicide Spraying? | Lakatan Banana Farming

This video shows the leaves of our lakatan bananas infected with Black Sigatoka as well as the application of fungicides to our plants.

What is a Black Sigatoka?

Black Sigatoka is a very destructive disease to the foliage or leaves of banana trees. It is a leaf spot disease also called as black leaf streak causing a significant reductions in leaf are. The disruption of photosynthesis can reduce fruit yield by up to 50%. Black Sigatoka is caused by the Ascomycte Fungus Mycosphaerella Fijiensis. Discovered in 1963 named after the Sigatoka Valley in Fiji.

Just in case the banana plants' leaves are infected with Black Sigatoka, a deleafing activity has to be conducted to remove the infected leaves with sigatoka to control the infections in the farm. Other measures to control Black Sigatoka include:

1. Removal of Infected Leaves
2. Efficient Drainage and Irrigation System
3. Sufficient Spacing of Banana Trees
4. Application of Fungicides
5. Planting of Banana Trees more than 1000 meters above sea level
6. Multi-cropping or mixing of bananas with other trees.

Application of Fungicides

Fungicide Spraying on the foliage and pseudo stem of bananas should be commenced with the initial appearance of disease and repeated at two weeks interval. There are two types of Fungicides:

a. Contact Fungicides-effective only on the leaves present at the moment of application and can be easily washed away by the rain. However, we can add Hoestic Sticker to our mixture so that it will stick on plants' leaves.

b. Systemic Fungicides-are absorbed into plants leaves.

Mixture:

16 Liters of Water
Foliar Fertilizers
Fungicides(Contact)

Best time to spray: Early Morning at 5 AM or Late Afternoon at 5 PM.
