What a ripoff! Unbelievable installation of batteries, inverter and solar panels on a classic Hymer.
Here's a sorry tale. Ken went to a very well-known retailer of accessories for motorhomes (not RoadPro!!) to have batteries, an inverter and solar panels fitted to his classic Hymer. Unfortunately, what should have helped Ken to enjoy his motorhoming even more, turned into a disaster with what could have been fatal consequences. A 150W solar panel coming off the roof of your motorhome while you're driving down the motorway is not a recommended safety feature.
Not only were the solar panels stuck on with bathroom sealant and not screwed down, the inverter was installed in such a way that it would drain the leisure batteries in minutes. The installer had connected the inverter so that it was powering the fridge, the heater and even the battery charger. This is the battery charger that was charging the batteries that were supplying the inverter that was powering the charger that was supplying the batteries that were powering the charger, etc, etc, etc. The result: flat batteries in a very short time indeed.
That's not all. The installer ran the cable - carrying 240V remember - underneath the motorhome and connected it to the suspension with cable ties! The first Ken knew about that was when an MOT inspector failed the vehicle because of it.
Ken asked us to remove and replace the panels - the second one was loose and also about to fall off - and you can see the quality of the workmanship in the video.
There are installers who offer low prices, free camping on a pretty campsite and who give a great line in chat. At RoadPro, we think that the most important thing we can do is install our products so that they're efficient, reliable and safe. If you agree with us, get in touch. If you'd prefer to save a few quid and get flying solar panels and an inverter that is going to drain your batteries in no time flat, we can give you the name of an installer who could be just what you're looking for.
