Medical Stories - Hereditary Angioedema (HAE) Lisa's Story

In this segment of the PBS series Medical Stories, we follow the story of a San Diego family coping with a rare disease called hereditary angioedema or HAE. Ever since she was a child, Lisa suffered from unexplained bouts of swelling on her face and other places that could last for days. It was devastating and painful and left her feeling ashamed. The diagnosis proved elusive. No doctors could pin down the precise cause of her condition. The only person who knew just how much Lisa was suffering was her mother, because she, too, had been coping with the same problem for decades.

Today, Lisa doesn't hold back from enjoying life with her husband and young son. Both Lisa and her mother found relief and an ability to better manage their lives with medicines that are being developed to prevent attacks of HAE. Both women are participating in clinical research that is helping to create an optimistic future for those living with HAE.
