Why This Sand Mountain Produces a Deep Hum #Shorts

In the Mojave Desert, the Kelso Dunes produce a rare natural sound known as booming sand.
Under the right conditions, large sections of sand slide down the dune and create a deep low-frequency hum or booming sound that can be heard across the desert.
The phenomenon occurs when uniform, dry sand grains move together in a synchronized layer, producing resonance through a process studied in granular physics.
The Kelso Dunes, located in the Mojave National Preserve, rise over 200 meters and are one of the most well-documented examples of this acoustic phenomenon in North America.
Similar “singing dunes” have been recorded in China, Morocco, and Chile, but the exact conditions required for the sound remain highly specific.
