Seyðisfjörður - Discover Iceland's Quirky Eastern Gateway - Cultural Travel Guide

The spectacularly sited town of Seydisfjordur bursts into life every week when the Smyril Line ferry MS Norönna completes its voyage from Denmark via the Faroe Islands. For those onboard ship the entrance into the sheltered fjord provides a highlight of the trip.
The majority of passengers take to their cars and speed through the town bound for distant Reykjavik. However, those who choose to linger a while find that this friendly community provides the perfect introduction to the remote east of Iceland.
The town has a distinctly Norwegian feel to it as most of the oldest mid 19th century buildings were shipped in from Norway to house the incoming fishermen. These days tourism is the mainstay of the economy and the village offers many quirky artistic encounters as well as a myriad of treks to nearby waterfalls and up into the surrounding highlands.
