In this video, I dive into the wild world of Chinese characters with Jake Gill, a Chinese educator, a former graduate student in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, a Computer Assisted Language Learning researcher, and the CEO of Skritter, an app that helps Japanese and Chinese learners master characters through active production instead of passive recognition.
People frequently ask me how to best tackle Chinese characters, especially through the context of my story-based approach to learning, and I am excited to pick Jake’s brain on this tricky aspect of Japanese and Chinese.
In the interview, we discuss:
0:00 How did Jake discover Skritter & eventually become CEO?
5:42 How does Skritter approach learning Chinese characters?
7:00 The benefits of “Active Recall”
8:55 Is it necessary to write characters by hand or is recognition enough?
12:43 The basic steps of learning Chinese characters
19:00 How to overcome character overwhelm and why just a few hundred characters unlocks so much of Chinese and Japanese
26:21 What is the hardest language in the world?
27:20 Why Olly is critical of most language learning apps
