Inside the Royal Marines’ new drone-powered beach assault
As the Royal Navy continues its transformation under the Atlantic Bastion programme, uncrewed and autonomous systems are beginning to reshape how maritime operations are conducted.
At Stonehouse Barracks in Plymouth, Exercise Spring Sabre is testing how new technologies can take personnel out of harm’s way during some of the most dangerous missions carried out by the UK’s armed forces.
For the Royal Marines, the UK’s elite amphibious fighting force, these autonomous systems provide commanders with enhanced reconnaissance capabilities. Uncrewed vessels and drones can approach contested coastlines, gather intelligence on enemy defences, and relay vital information back to the main force before troops are committed to the assault.
BFBS Forces News Reporter, Tom Sables, takes a closer look at Exercise Spring Sabre and explores how robotics, drones and AI are helping shape the Royal Navy’s vision of a Hybrid Navy—where highly trained personnel operate alongside advanced autonomous systems on the battlefield.
