Eternals Without Their CGI Powers! | VFX Breakdown

Eternals is another MCU film that despite receiving mixed reviews did pretty well at the box office. And as with most Marvel films even though the screenplay and character development may seem lacking to some, thanks to the likes of Scanline, Luma Pictures, ILM, Weta Digital, and Rise VFX, the Visual effects are always "Marvelous".

Deviants.
ILM developed the majority of deviants in this movie including 2 of the 3 stages of the main deviant character Kro.
The design of the deviants is based on different apex predators like tigers, bulls, and eagles, however, whereas these apex predators belong to different species, the deviants all belong to the same one.
This meant that every deviant had to be unique in shape and size and in the manner in which they moved but at the same time have the coherence in appearance indicative of different versions within the same species.

The Deviants are made up of dozens of closed surfaces, some are free to move like the tendrils structure and others are fused together like muscles.
They have three basic material properties: one is the outermost layer of translucent skin, under that, they have an iridescent metallic color that is then shaded with thin long tendrils of gold.
These thin gold tendrils are used throughout the movie to represent celestial power and in this case, they represent the celestial energy trapped within the deviant's body.
Kro took almost a year to build because (thanks to his evolution) he had three different bodies with different anatomies that had to be distinct enough to be identifiably different and still remain recognizable as the same character.
This had to be continued in animation as his unique gait and manner of movement had to remain recognizable throughout his evolution.

Forming The Suits.
The actual aesthetic for each of the Eternals suits was provided by Marvel Studios' art department but how these suits were formed on the characters was a collaboration between Luma Pictures, Marvel, and the director.
Olivier Dumont who is a Senior Visual Effects Supervisor at Luma Pictures told us that this involved a lot of to and fro between themselves and the director because they had to establish a visual language between all 10 characters so that the audience could understand the character's different powers.
Since each character's suit had its own distinctive linear symbols, Luma used these as a guideline for forming the suits, the lines would be made up of the thin gold tendrils that represent celestial energy, and the signs on the wall would then connect these "celestial energy lines" to the characters as if they were 3D printing the symbols on the suit, from these symbols, multiple layers of FX expand out revealing the rest of the suit.

Marvel Cosmic Universe.
Scanline dealt with most of the cosmic scenes in this movie, including the "Big Bang" montage, Ajak and Sersi's meetings with Arisham, and the World Forge.
The design for the World Forge still was clear even after principal photography had finished.
The initial idea was to use multiple copies of the Domo spaceship as a base for the environment and therefore hint to the possibility of there being more Eternals out there.
The director wanted to use bold colors based on Jack Kirby's original illustrations to capture his spirit within the environment.
Once they had the design more or less locked down they could then do a Pickup shoot with the actress playing Sersi and the correct lighting to fit their World Forge environment.

Celestials.
Scanline developed the look and the models for all of the celestials in Eternals, these models were built with enough detail to hold up in close-up shots but for extreme close-up shots of Arisham's hand or face, they projected more detail onto the model using 2.5d projections to help sell the enormous scale of the character and to add believability.
Weta Digital took Scanline's Tiamut asset and did a similar thing to it for the final emergence and battle scene.

Digi Doubles.
For the Camden fight scene, various copies of Sersi and Sprite had to be made.
Scanline sent their Track data to the Additional VFX supervisor who oversaw the motion control shoot, he then sent back multiple elements where the lighting was matched to the original Camden shoot plates.
Once placed in the shot, these additional characters were rotomated so that they could render the shadows they cast back onto the location plate as well as the shadows they cast onto all the characters on screen, real or computer-generated.
All the characters in the background and middle distance are Digi-doubles with cloth simulations to mimic the movements of Sprite and Sersi's costumes.
