How To Play Piano Chords In Any Key (For Beginners)

In this beginner's piano lesson, you will learn how to play chords in any major key.

Firstly, we take a look at the notes of the C major scale, C D E F G A B C.

Triad chords that correspond to each of these notes include C major, D minor, E minor, F major, G major, A minor and B diminished.

You can form each of these chords by playing a note, skipping a note then playing a note. For example, play C, skip D, play E, skip F and play G. This gives you a C major chord (C-E-G).

These principles can be applied to any major key or scale. For instance, in the key of G major or G major scale, the notes are G A B C D E F#. The triad chords are G major, A minor, B minor, C major, D major E minor and F# diminished.

The pattern of triad chords in any major key is major minor minor major major minor diminished.

You can add sevenths to each of these triad chords to form 4-note extended chords. The pattern of chords become major 7th, minor 7th, minor 7th, major 7th, dominant 7th, minor 7th, minor 7th b5.

You can form various chord progressions with these chords. For example, a I vi IV V chord progression in the C major scale would be C major - A minor - F major - G major.

When playing chord progressions, some of these chords must be inverted. For example instead of playing the F major chord in the order, F-A-C, you may play C-F-A. It's still the same chord except that the order of notes is different. In other words, the chord is inverted.

There's much more in the video. Hope you find value in this beginner's piano lesson and thank you for watching.
